Charles Addams, a US comic book creator, invented The Addams Family and the character of Wednesday. From 1938 until his death, a series of his cartoons that appeared in The New Yorker over a 50-year period presented a humorous and macabre take on the concept of the ideal American family.

Since then, there have been sequels to a feature picture directed by Barry Sonnenfeld (1991), a TV series (1964–1966), and new computer-animated movies (2019 and 2021).
